Oh I do like to be beside the seaside...
Just make sure you are in the right town. We play away to Worthing in BOGNOR tomorrow!
The rason we're not playing at Worthing is due to on-going problems with their pitch, hence the switch along the Sussex Coast to their old friends at Bognor.
And by far the easiest way to get there is on the Supporters' Coach, organised by Shaun Dooley.
For the car drivers out there the address of Bognor Regis Town is Nyewood Lane, Bognor Regis, Sussex; with the all-important postcode for the old SatNav being PO21 2TY
If you’re going by train then the mainline central London terminus to depart from is Victoria; with this service also stopping at Clapham junction & East Croydon, where it may be easier for you to get on at.
The service is half-hourly, one slightly quicker than the other. The six minutes past the hour takes one hour and 41 minutes [Clapham Junction at 12 minutes past & East Croydon 23 past the hour] whilst the 36 minutes past the hour train takes one hour & 38 minutes [Clapham Junction ay xx:42; East Croydon xx:53]
I would suggest the last possible train to make sure you arrive for kick off is the 12:36 from Victoria [Clapham Junction 12:42 & East Croydon 12:53] arriving at Bognor Regis at 2.17pm.
If you’re returning straight after the match you should make the 17:06; which necessitates a change at Barnham; getting to Barnham at 17:13, where you will have to wait five minutes for the London service. This gets to East Croydon at 18:21; Clapham Junction at 18:31 and pulls in at Victoria for 18:40.
This is followed by the direct service to Victoria, which leaves Bognor at half past five. Getting to East Croydon at 18:51; Clapham Junction at 29:01, before stopping at Victoria at 19:10.If you’re not in a rush and want a few post-match drinks, or even a paddle before it gets dark, then later in the evening the train that changes at Barnham leaves Bognor Regis at four minutes past the hour and the direct one is twenty minutes to the hour. The LAST trains for these are at 20:40 for the direct one; and 21:04 via Barnham.
Don’t despair entirely if you miss either of those. There are two more services back to London, leaving a ten o’clock and half past ten…but they both involve two changes at Barnham and Three Bridges; the journey taking over two hours.
And if you miss those…wrap up warm under the pier!
Bognor Regis train station is about three quarters of a mile to the ground. My directions are going to be 'pretty rubbish', but I hope they make sense...turn right out of the station and carry on walking until you come to a public footpath on the left. Walk down this, and it comes out almost opposite the entrance to the ground. Waling along from the station you will go over a small roundabout, and the next turning on the left after that should be Parklands Avenue. The path is on the left just after that.
Pub wise, the club house bar is fine; and if Bognor Regis Town offer their usual tea bar service then the tea bar is usually excellent, renowned throughout non-league football in the south-east for their wonderful home made portions of bread pudding....here's hoping!
In town there is the Wetherspoons, The Hatter's Inn, which is always popular with Hamlet fans, when in town.
If heading for this pub then may I also suggest Heygates Bookshop if you like reading material. This is a veritable traditional 'junk shop of a book shop',almost opposite the 'Spoons at 67 Little High Street, and there's a good chance you'll find something to read for the coach journey home (hint, hint: book that seat on it now!)
Around the town of Bognor Regis there's the traditional pier, of course. Opposite that is a place that used to be a 'staple' of Old Skool Rabble trips here, back in the day when pubs didn't open until eleven o'clock: swigging from tins the crazy golf course! But there's also the Bognor Regis Museum, which I've not been to yet...maybe tomorrow!
Whatever you do, it's not as bad a place at it's made out to be, albeit, Worthing undoubtedly would have made a better day out...but you will only need to exclaim 'Bugger Bognor' if we lose!
See you there...the more behind the goal the merrier.
