Yesterday the weekly 'Southwark News' reviewed our pre-season games, prior to the big kick-off tomorrow:
Hamlet pre-season round up
Hamlet's busy end to pre-season has seen a mixed bag of results as Gavin Rose puts the finishing touches to his squad before Saturdays opening league fixture of the campaign.
Dulwich took part in five fixtures in eight days starting with last weeks 3-2 defeat against a side from Premiership outfit Crystal Palace.
More than 1,000 people packed in to Champion Hill to see the pre-season fixture and Hamlet put in a good performance with Laurent Hamici and Ashley Carew netting for the Pink and Blues.
Just 24 hours later a much changed side, including a number of triallists, took on Sevenoaks Town. The game ended 2-2 with Ashley Robinson and Emiliano Hysi scoring for Dulwich.
On Saturday Dulwich travelled to Conference South side Whitehawk and they lost out 2-0 with Albert Jarrett and Jake Robinson scoring for the home side.
On Monday Hamlet had more luck when they took on Southern Counties East club Holmesdale FC who they defeated 4-0. Among the scorers were Xavier Vidal and Abdul Mansaray.
Dulwich will complete their pre-season fixtures with a home game against local rivals Tooting & Mitcham on Tuesday night before the real action begins at the weekend.
In their opening fixture of the Ryman Premier League campaign Hamlet are at home to Harrow Borough this Saturday, kick off 3pm, before they travel to face Kingstonian two days later. That game commences at 7.45pm.
Today the 'South London Press' concentrated on the new season, in their weekend edition, with some words of caution from the boss:
ROSE:WE NEED TIME
Dulwich Hamlet boss Gavin Rose has warned that the turnover of players at Champion Hill this summer means it may take longer for his side to gel.
Rose has overseen more personnel changes than ever before in his five years with the South Londoners. They missed out on a Ryman League Premier Division spot on the final day of last season after only managing a 1-1 draw with Kingstonian, who they play on Monday after tomorrow's opener at home to Harrow Borough.
Key players such as Erhun Oztumer, Peter Adeniyi and Ahmed Deen have retired or switched clubs, but Rose moved to bring in a raft of new faces such as Laurent Hamici, Terrell Forbes, Ashley Kamara and ex-Palace man Ashley Robinson-to name a few.
The Hamlet went unbeaten in their first six matches last season, but that was with a squad almost untouched from the previous season's Ryman Division One South title win, and Rose feels it will take longer for his new team to get off and running.
"We felt we needed freshening up," Rose said. "We had some very good servants who gave us two or three years, which is unusual in non-league football. But we thought it was time to move on and have new faces and a new challenge. The squad might take some time to bed in so we hope to remain competitive early on. But we are looking forward to working with this refreshed squad and have them take on our ideas. It is difficult to set targets when you have a new squad. Things are a lot easier with a settled side but we haven't signed bad players and there is a lot of experience in there and we will remain a force. We are still optimistic that we will be a tough team that everyone will respect and fear. If we can reach the play-offs, it will be a very successful year for us."
One of the departing players to have left a huge hole is Erhun Oztumer, who has realised his dream of being a professional footballer afer signing for League One Peterborough United. The playmaker was grateful to Rose for setting the team to play to his strengths, but the Dulwich boss is confident his side has the players and versatility to perform without their former star.
"We've got a few players who can play a similar role to the one Erhun played but we also have players who can adapt to different formations," he said. "Last year teams knew how we were going to set up, with two central midfielders and Erhun in the hole, but they won't be sure what we will do this year. We have a range of formations we can play. We are happy with the number we have to start off with. We have about 20 players in the first-team squad so we can see how we are getting on and if it is not working then we can lose one or two and not suffer. It is good for competition in the early part of the season because everyone will want to be involved. Everyone has had a really good pre-season."
Rose's new signings come with plenty of pedigree. Forbes, Kamara & Ashley Carew were all plying their trade in the Conference South last season with Dover Athletic.
"We lost a lot of numbers so when replacing them we wanted people who wouldn't take half a season to bed in," Rose said. "A lot of the new guys have been around the block and played at higher levels. Harry Ottaway is still about a month away from training-he is a good leader and works hard and I believe if he had come back earlier last season after injury then we would have reached the ply-offs-but we have brought in Laurent [Hamici].so we are still healthy in that area. He's had a good pre-season."
Dulwich's final warm-up was an entertaining 3-3 draw with local rivals Tooting & Mitcham United on Tuesday. Jordan Hibbert, Nyren Clunis and Kershaney Samuels all hit spectacular strikes, with similarly impressive goals for Tooting from TJ Nkoma (2) and Sol Pinnock.
Finally, away from the printed press, there was a long pre-season feature, published on Wednesday, prior to tomorrow's opener with Harrow Borough, on the www.kentishfootball.co.uk website, with much comment from Gavin:
THE CLUB'S GROWN AND WE'VE GROWN WITH THE CLUB IN OUR SIX YEARS IN CHARGE,SAYS GAVIN ROSE
DULWICH HAMLET manager Gavin Rose says he wants his side to keep their season going right up until the final whistle.
The Hamlet finished in sixth-place in the Ryman Premier League last season, just missing out on the play-offs by a single point.
Rose, 37, guided the London club to the Ryman League Division One South title the previous season and has a reputation for providing entertaining football.
They begin their new campaign with a home game against Harrow Borough on Saturday.
Dave Anderson’s side finished in eighteenth-place last season with 58 points from their 46 league outings.
“We played Harrow Borough three times last year and it was always difficult,” said Rose.
“We know Dave well, he’s a really good guy, so they’ll be set-up really well organised and for us is will be nice to start well.
“You never know what’s going to happen. I thought our league was very unpredictable last year. When we was in good form we did really well but at times we knew we could lose to anyone as well at the same time.
“We’d like to start with a win. We can’t really tell though. As we know the season isn’t about the first game of the season, it’s what happens at the end.”
Reflecting on his successful six year stint at Champion Hill, Rose said: “We missed out on the last day (last year). With the last five years we’ve always worked up until the play-offs or the last game of the season. We’ve always been there or there abouts; two play-off losses; we’ve won the last game of the season where we’ve won the league and last year we’ve just missed out on the play-offs.
“When you’re in those margins it can go one way or another and you’ve got to take the rough with the smooth really.
“We’ve had some success on the last days and we’ve had not so but as long as the boys’ are pushing as far as they can then we can’t complain or we can’t argue. We’ll have the same, we’ll take it.”
When asked his aspirations for the season ahead, Rose replied: “We’re ambitious. We always want to win. We know we’re up against some really good teams in our league.
“It doesn’t mean before a ball’s been kicked that we decide we’re not going to be anywhere near it, we’re not going to push for it. It might not happen but we want to push for that. We want to do the best that we can.”
Margate are splashing the cash to win the Ryman Premier League title and Jay Saunders’ Maidstone United will also be pushing for glory.
“Very good players have been attracted and rightly so,” Rose said of Margate.
“If they’ve got the money to do it, we’d all do the same thing, but at the end of the day it’s only eleven players that we’ve got to play against and we’ll see if we can be organsied and we can match up and be competitive.
“There’s no reason why we can’t make it hard for them and even beat them so we want to focus on the eleven players that we’ve got out against the eleven players that we’re playing against, not the money they take home because whilst on that pitch it’s nothing to do with money. It’s about what we do on the pitch.”
Rose and his management team are doing an excellent job at Champion Hill.
“This is our sixth season now so we’re enjoying it. We’re enjoying our time. I think the club’s grown and we’ve grown with the club," said Rose.
“We’ve got a good fan-base, we’ve got a vibrant youth academy what we run as well with players’ coming through so yes the progression is good.
“We’re enjoying it and hopefully we can keep stretching ourselves as far as we can.”
