Preview: Welling United (H) 02/01/22
The Hamlet are finally back in action as they kick off the new year with the visit of Welling to Champion Hill this Sunday.
It has been a vert quiet Christmas period in South East London, with the Hamlet having both festive fixtures postponed due to the ongoing COVID outbreak which is disrupting matches up and down the footballing pyramid. However, Gavin Rose's men will finally take to the pitch 15 days on from their last outing, in the hopes of putting past penalty pain behind them in the FA Trophy and kick off 2022 in style.
It might feel like a lifetime ago now, but Hamlet fans and players alike will still be haunted by the agony of that penalty defeat down in Devon, and so although 2021 may not have ended on a high, 2022 promises to be an exciting year for Dulwich. With the side firmly in the playoff mix, and with games in hand, Rose and his troops will be eyeing a top seven finish come May and can even still dare to dream of Automatic promotion.
But, there is still a long way to go, and the Hamlet will be focusing on kickstarting the new year right. Three points at Champion Hill this Sunday against a Welling side who have hit a rotten run of form of late would provide the ideal start.
Peter Taylor's team were due to welcome Dulwich on Boxing Day but will now make the trip short trip across London to Champion Hill after the prior postponement. The Wings find themselves lurking in lowly 18th spot and last time out suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat away at Maidstone United despite taking the lead. The Hamlet's last league outing came away at Tonbridge, when a late Jordan Higgs rocket rescued a point in an entertaining 2-2 stalemate at the Longmead Stadium.
Sunday's opponents have already visited Champion Hill this season in cup competition, with Dulwich coming out on top in the London Senior Cup Second Round encounter. The visitors initially took the lead against a very youthful Hamlet XI, however AJ Harris-Sealy starred setting up all three goals in the eventual convincing Dulwich victory. Chike Kandi bagged himself a brace, and young debutant defender Jamal Abubakari slotted home a rebound to complete the turnaround.
