The MANarama Big Interview: Christian Smith

The MANarama Big Interview: Christian Smith

After the drama of Friday night there's another big game coming...

League sponsors MANarama catch up with Friday’s goalscorer Christian Smith to find out the post-FA Cup way forward.

Christian Smith has the perfect antidote to cure any lingering FA Cup frustration - getting in the play-offs!

It was a case of what could have been on Friday, a night where the club did themselves proud on and off the pitch.

Carlisle United may have not had the tough examination which was threatened once the midfielder nodded home at the start of the second half.

But Smith thinks everyone has seen exactly what the club is all about. Now it’s a case of what happens next.

Usually after an exit there’s an expectant FA Cup kick-back, but it’s an on the pitch response he is hoping for more than anything else.

“When a club at our level has a great run or a high-profile game then everyone always asks if the crowds will come back for the next home match,” he said.

“With Dulwich Hamlet it’s a bit different! The crowds were here before and they will be here after - so in terms of how we can push on, it’s more to do with the players.

“The fans were fantastic and they always are. They deserve every good comment made about them this weekend. As a squad we’re a bit gutted as we could have stopped a few of those goals.

“Of course it would be amazing if our crowds could rise even further but it’s down to us to climb the table and bring those extras back through the turnstile.

“We have still got a chance of the play-offs and that’s got to be our aim. Our performances
in the National League South have been OK in patches but the results haven’t been there every week.

“It’s up to us now, we need to put a run together. That needs to start on Tuesday at Welling which is going to be another tough game.

“Three points is our aim, and once we get that win you don’t know where it will take you.”

But Smith doesn’t think anyone should forget Friday night is a hurry.

“For the club it was a massive night and everyone here should always remember the moment,” he added.

“It’s the first time we have reached the first round for many many years and the spotlight was fully deserved.

“It’s a shame we made a couple of mistakes, and they scored that incredible goal when they did right after we got back into it, but sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture.

“Some people watching at home may not have known what a great club this is and now they do. That’s what it’s all about.

“They may be sitting on their sofa thinking ‘they have got a good crowd, it’s an FA Cup game’ but we get these type of crowds every week!”
