THIS AFTERNOON’S MATCH PREVIEW – CORINTHIAN-CASUALS (HOME)

Revenge on the menu as Champion Hill awaits the Corinthian-Casuals...

Dulwich Hamlet will be itching for revenge this afternoon as they welcome one of their oldest foes to Champion Hill having slipped to less than glorious defeat in the earlier fixture away at King George’s Field. That chilly evening in Tolworth, a Hamlet misfiring more often than a second hand Trabant, failed to put away the chances that fell their way before falling to a late sucker punch as a deft late lob from the Causals’ Jamie Byatt settled matters. Those were dark days for the Hamlet with but a single win in the league for over a month and dumped out of both the FA Cup and FA Trophy in successive weeks as they slid into the bottom half of the table. By contrast, the Casuals had started to gain some momentum after a stop-start opening to the season that had seen they pick up just a single win through the whole campaign to date and exit the FA Cup at the hands of lower league opposition in the shape of Redhill. Such was the topsy-turvy nature of this division that from rock-bottom after six matches that victory saw them overleap the Hamlet into 10th spot.

However the revival was short-lived, back-to-back defeats at the hands of Kentish opposition, Hythe winning 3-1 at King George’s Fields, Sittingbourne bagging three without reply at Bourne Park, stymied Casuals hopes of encroaching on the promotion places. The losses might have been arrested by a narrow 2-1 victory over Eastbourne Town at home, but with only a single victory (away to Whitstable) to cheer the Casuals’ fans since then, the promotion hopes that were awakened in early October have swiftly turned to the dread of relegation though a little of the gloom must have been lifted when Byatt broke through after 87 minutes to break a stalemate away to current basement boys Walton Casuals on New Year’s Day.

Key danger man must always be the diminutive Byatt, an experienced forward who has already chipped in with eight goals this term including match-winning goals in wins at Worthing and against the Hamlet. However, against the Hamlet it was stopper Danny Bracken who earned the bulk of the plaudits that evening with a string of fine saves to keep the Hamlet at bay, including one almost miraculous effort to claw out a certain goal for Ryan James.
