Time for our weekly round-up
Coverage from our local newspapers over the last week
On Tuesday the midweek edition of the 'South London Press' expressed concerned over the games we have to play:
Backlog may threaten promotio push
Dulwich Hamlet's trip to Horsham tonight (7.45pm) is the first of 12 matches in six weeks as a fixture backlog begins to threaten their their Ryman League Divsion One South championship push. Manager Gavin Rose said: "The backlog could definately have a bearing but we've got Frankie Sawyer and Ethan Pinnock back from injury and have signed Connor French from Walton & Hersham. So the games will have a bearing but we've got players that can share the workload." Hamlet fell 1-0 at Hythe Town on Saturday, with Craig Cloke hitting the winner eight minutes from time. Rose said: "We more than shaded it. Hythe tried to deny us space and we just couldn't take our opportunities. They nicked it but I can't really complain."
Meanwhile, in the same edition of the 'South London Press', the Danny Carr saga continued on the back page:
Chelsea and Arsenal eye taking Carr on a trial
Daniel Carr's future could be set for a twist this week after it emerged that Arsenal and Chelsea both want to take the Dulwich Hamlet striker on trial. Liverpool had the young forward with them last week and he played innan U21 match. The Anfield outfit want to extend his spell with them while they weigh up putting together a package. But Dulwich boss Gavin Rose has revealed the two London clubs have made moves. He said: "Chelsea and Arsenal want him in, which is feasible because he'd still be able to play for us. The interest from Liverpool is firm, but that is quite similar in London. We've had a few murmours of speaking to the boy, mainly from clubs a bit lower in the Premier League and Championship. If those bids were right and the lad fancied it then it could end all the trials and speculation. We've had a few people talking about how much it would cost. We'll try to work out the best direction for Daniel. It would be nice if he could finish off the season without going here, there and everywhere."
Two days later, the weekly 'Southwark News' led with Gavin Rose talking about our squad:
' It's now or never ' for this Hamlet side-boss Rose states
Dulwich Hamlet gaffer Gavin Rose believes his side will have to deliver promotion this year, as he fears his talented players will be picked off by other clubs in the summer.
Scouts have flocked to Champion Hill this season to keep an eye-catching group of players who have put in a number of impressive displays.
It seems inevitable come the season end that striker Daniel Carr will head to a professional club, having already impressed on trial at Liverpool.
With Xavier Vidal, Erhun Oztumer and Nyren Clunis very much on the radar of scouts at higher levels they and others might not be at Champion Hill whatever division Hamlet end up in.
Rose said: "This is now or never for this group of players. They are very talented and are being watched. If we didn't go up we would have a very different group of players next season I imagine."
The Hamlet boss added: "As a group we have worked so hard to get where we are, some have been here a while and others haven't, but the group are good and we are happy with how they are going. We are now at the stage of the season where we can almost forget what has gone on before and we are playing a mini-league. There is more pressure as you get to see the bigger picture coming up as the games go by, but we can draw on our experience from the last two seasons to make sure we perform as inevitably there appears to be more on every home game we play."
The Hamlet injury room is fairly clear as Dulwich get ready to play two games a week until the end of the season.
Ethan Pinnock is set to return for the reserves this week and both Frankie Sawyer and Josh Turner are back in first team contention after coming through periods of rehabilitation.
Daniel Carr's trial at Liverpool has sparked interest of other professional clubs and Rose told the News he expects firm bids to come in for him sooner rather than later.
He said: "One or two clubs are expected to put sealed bids in for Daniel but we cannot say who they are at this stage. Liverpool were keen to take him up for another trial but we have to balance that with our needs, and the travelling that would entail may be a problem. This group of players are great as they understand that we may stop them going on trial but only because we have a need for them too. In the past we may have had players who were more selfish and thought of themselves. But I am not worried about this group in that respect, they understand that we and the club have helped get them to where they are now."
Below that article the 'Southwark News' followed the round-up of our last few games, concentrated on the weekend one:
Hythe stun Hamlet title hopes
It was a case of smash and grab by hythe at the weekend in a game Dulwich dominated without creating many clear cut chances.
A goal nine minutes from time sealed the 1-0 win for the home side in a game in which Hamlet had the majority of possession and bookings; collecting six cautions from the official.
Hamlet dominated large parts of the first half with Daniel Carr just failing to turn in a right wing cross and then having a back heel scrambled away from the line.
On another day Dulwich could have been awarded a penalty when Ellis Green appeared to be brought down from behind, but not according to those officiating.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with sporadic Hythe attacks. However, Dulwich only created a couple of openings with Nyren Clunis firing just wide and Luke Hickie bringing a good save from the keeper.
However, ten minutes from time a careless pass on the halfway line eventually led to a corner being conceded.
Having not properly cleared the danger Craig Cloke punished Dulwich to nick the points.
On Tuesday night Hamlet closed the gap on league leaders Maidstone United to just three points with a 4-1 victory over horsham.
Goals from Clunis, Erhun Oztumer, Connor French and Carr were enough to secure the points with Maidstone set to visit Champion Hill next tuesday for a crunch clash.
Last Thursday Dulwich exited the London Senior Cup after a much changed side lost out to Ryman Premier Division side Kingstonian.
The higher ranked club eventually prevailed 4-2 having spurned a two goal lead, the second of which came just after the break.
But despite welcome goals for strikers Frankie Sawyer and French the K's pulled away to progress to the next round.
And, for our last report of the week, we look at yesterdays' weekend edition of the 'South London Press' which again concentrated on Danny Carr:
Contract for Carr
Dulwich Hamlet boss Gavin Rose admitted that Dulwich are looking to offer Daniel Carr a new contract.
Carr is currently undergoing a trial at Liverpool and has attracted the interest of other high-profile clubs, including Chelsea and Arsenal. Rose admitted that the club will not stand in Carr's way if a bid comes in, but they are eager to ensure that they receive a fee for their young starlet. "I wouldn't want to stop the boy moving on," said Rose. "But he is contracted to us and we will be looking to renegotiate with him, to make sure our club is protected. We are waiting for people to bid so he doesn't have to go on trial. But at the moment he is our player and we may well extend that to next season if no one takes him this year." Second-placed Dulwich host struggling Whitstable Town on Saturday before a top-of-the-table clash against Maidstone on Tuesday evening. Rose says even victory on Tuesday would be pointless if they fail to take maximum points on Saturday. He said: "We can't concentrate too much on the Maidstone game and then take our eye off the ball in the games around it."
