Time to look back at the printed press
Here's the round-up from the news-stands from the last week...
On Sunday, despite being very difficult to obtain in the local shops, the 'Non League Paper' had our match at home to Billericay Town as their main Bostik League Premier Division report:
BRICKNELL DOUBLE IS TOO HOT FOR HAMBig spenders Billericay Town are finally beginning to get their money's worth, finishing strongly to seal victory at the home of last season's play-off losing finalists.
Dulwich made a lively start and went close with less than a minute on the clock, Dumebi Dumaka dragging his shot wide after running clear into the box.
Moments later, Ibrahim Karbo went close with a raking drive from 25 yards.
But Hamlet suffered a setback on ten minutes when defensive lynchpin Anthony Acheampong limped off with a hamstring injury.
Perhaps as a result, the inevitable title favourites came more into the game with tall defender Rob Swaine proving an attacking threat from set pieces.
One of his headers whistled past the angle and other drew a flying save from Hamlet keeper Preston Edwards.
Jake Robinson then fired into the side-netting before Swaine's far-post header from a Jermaine Pennant free-kick was tipped away by Edwards' left hand.
Dulwich retaliated and Ashley Carew produced a fine shot from outside the box which clipped the top of the bar.
Then Edwards went full length to push away Pennant's 30-yard free-kick.
A brathtaking first half came to a climax, with two goals in six minutes.
Billericay struck first in the 43rd minute when Billy Bricknell skilfully controlled a lofted through-ball and fired past Edwards from the edge of the box.
But Hamlet deservedly levelled deep into first-half stoppage-time.
Leo Chambers handled the ball as he slid in to challenge Gavin Tomlin just inside the area and Carew made no mistake from the resultant spot-kick.
Billericay got the measure of the hosts after the break and close twice just before the hour mark.
Bricknell beat Edwards on the edge of the box but was thwarted when Mark Weatherstone raced back to clear off the line. And just seconds later, Carew emulated his teammate with another goalline clearance. However, the visitors eventually led on 72 minutes.
Nana Baokye-Yiadom was penalised for handball and Bricknell sent Edwards the wrong way from the spot.
Robinson clinched the points with an outrageous third goal four minutes from time.
Hamlet lost possession following a free-kick and Robinson beat the stranded Edwards with a brilliant lofted 40-yard shot from way out on the right.
STAR MAN: Billy Bricknell (Billericay Town)
ENTERTAINMENT: *** (out of a possible five stars)
In Tuesdays midweek edition of the 'South London Press' there was only a small 'Non League' column, with only the briefest of mentions for The Hamlet:
Dulwich Hamlet lost 3-1 at home to Billericay Town with Ashley Carew’s goal proving to only be a consolation.
The visitors – who boasted Jermaine Pennant, Paul Konchesky and Kevin Foley in their ranks – had Billy Bricknell net twice with Jake Robinson also on target.
And so to Thursdays reporting in the weekly 'Southwark News', where there tow pieces. the main one featured on the weekend match:
Hamlet foot Bill in unlucky lossDulwich Hamlet were affected by injuries and then saw a controversial penalty and a wonder strike as they lost to big-spending Billericay Town last weekend.
Hamlet made a bright start, creating a number of chances and hitting the woodwork through Ashley Carew's deflected strike.
Former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermiane Pennant was a threat from dead balls, before Town went in front through Billy Bricknell.
Dulwich responded positively to the setback and were quickly level. It was good work on the right from Gavin Tomlin, who was stopped by Leo Chambers with the defender handling the ball in the box. After a delay for treatment for Tomlin, Carew stepped up and send the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot.
Tomlin departed at the break and Hamlet almost fell behind again but Marc Weatherstone cleared off the line from Bricknell.
The away side went in front with jusy eighteen minutes left, Bricknell getting his second from the penalty spot after the ball had struck the unlucky Nana Boakye-Yiadom's hand in the box. It was a harsh call as Boakye-Yiadom wasn't looking at the ball.
Former England defender Paul Konchesky was then lucky to stay on the pitch after appearing to be the last man when he took down Nyren Clunis, but he escaped with a booking.
There was more bad luck when Hamlet's Michael Chambers had his shirt pulled in the box, but the referee waved play on.
And Town compounded that poor decision by scoring a third through an audacious strike from halfway by Jake Robinson, who had spotted goalkeeper Preston Edwards off his line.
There was also an article on one of our departing players:
Addicks snap up Hamlet prospectCharlton Athletic have snapped up Dulwich Hamlet academy graduate Jamie Mascoll.
Mascoll made his debut in the first round of London Senior Cup in October 2015 in a 1-0 win against Thamesmead Town.
He went on to make eighteen senior appearances for hamlet, scoring one goal in a League Cup tie.
Mascoll told Dulwich's official website: "It's a dream come true for me to sign my first professional contract at Charlton Athleitc Football Club. I would like to thank the management staff at Dulwich Hamlet for helping me develop as a player and as a person on and off the pitch over the years. I would also like to thank the club for the constant support over the last five years, and to the amazing fans who support the club through good times and bad. I wish the club all the best for the season."
We finish our round-up with the somewhat 'Tooting-centric' coverage, previewing the big Bank Holiday derby, which takes place at Champion Hill tomorrow, from Friday's weekend copy of the 'South London Press':
Wilson confident Terrors can deliver on big derby stageFrank Wilson knows that his Tooting & Mitcham side are set to play on the biggest stage of their career at Dulwich Hamlet on Monday – but reckons that is no cause for alarm.
Hamlet had a crowd of 1,688 for their Bostik League Premier Division game against Billericay and regularly get four-figure gates.
Newly-promoted Tooting’s opening day home fixture against Brightlingsea Regent attracted just 290 fans.
“There will be a lot of boys in my dressing room who have not played in front of a crowd as big as we’ll get at Dulwich,” said Terrors boss Wilson. “I certainly haven’t managed in a game with that size of attendance either. But that all adds to the excitement of being in this division. You can only look forward to it. The good thing about playing Dulwich so early in the season is that there is no pressure on us at the moment – it’s not like we’re halfway through the season or in the final third of it. Everyone is trying to find their feet. We’ll go over there on Monday and give it a real go – there are no consequences. Gavin [Rose] has done an excellent job over there. They are a well-respected club who have built the infrastructure up to what it is now. They’ve got a real feel-good factor at the football club. They’ve come up through a similar pathway to what we did and have sustained themselves at this level for a number of years. They’ve been successful in play-off semi-finals and finals – we’d like to emulate the success that Dulwich have had and use it as a template. They are two football clubs who are distinctly different in many ways but I’ve got nothing but respect for Gav. We’ve become very well-rehearsed what Dulwich Hamlet Football Club looks like due to the games we’ve played against them before.”
