Tonbridge Angels 1-2 Dulwich Hamlet

Tonbridge Angels 1-2 Dulwich Hamlet

The Hamlet launched the season proper with a victory despite being reduced to 10 men from the 13th minute

For the teams visit here.

Dulwich overcame the early loss of Quade Taylor to a straight red card to record an opening day victory at newly promoted Tonbridge Angels.

The game got off to a cagey start with both sides feeling each other out. As a result, the first effort on goal did not arrive until the 11th minute when Joe Turner fired an effort that failed to trouble Ashley Maynard-Brewer in the Dulwich goal.

Dulwich then broke down the other end and a fine lofted pass from Christian Smith was brought down on the run by Nyren Clunis, but his cross was just too high for Danny Mills.

Within a minute Dulwich found themselves reduced to 10 men when a clearance by Quade Taylor struck an attacker and broke into the penalty area, Taylor tugged him back and was shown a straight red card. However, Turner's free kick was blocked and cleared.

Despite their numerical disaadvantage, it was Dulwich who controlled the match and they should have been awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute when Danny Mills was clearly held back when trying to get on the end of a David Ijaha free kick.

However, they were ahead a minute later when Jack Connors corner was headed in by David Ijaha, as he met the ball unchallenged on the edge of the six yard box.

Tonbridge looked to strike back immediately with a fine effort from Jack Parter, but Maynard-Brewer was equal to an effort that bounced in front of his dive.

The Hamlet continued to look dangerous from set plays and another free kick saw Christian Smith flick a header across the six yard box, whilst Richard Orlu also headed just wide from a corner.

Jack Connors was denied a penalty with four minutes to half time when he was balked in the penalty area, the referee instead awarding a free kick to The Angels for his hand touching the ball as he hit the ground.

Half Time 0-1

Dulwich opened the second half brightly and a Danny Mills run and cross just evaded the onrushing Jeffrey Monakana. However Dulwich were to add a second goal on the hour.

Home keeper Henly had been carrying a shoulder injury since late in the first half and he came to catch a long ball to the far post. However, it slipped from his grasp and he grabbed Danny Mills to prevent him scoring. The referee pointed to the spot and sent Henly from the field.

After a delay whilst Folkes took over in goal, Jeffrey Monakana comfortably beat the stand in keeper from the spot.

However, what should have been the catalyst for The Hamlet to see out the match comfortably against ten men and no specialist keeper was anything but. It all seemed easy enough when Jeffrey Monakana waltzed round the defence but he couldn't find Danny Mills, when he maybe should have shot.

Within a minute, Tonbridge were thrown a lifeline when the referee adjudged a push in the area and Turner smashed the ball home from the spot. The Angels now sensed they could retrieve something from the game, as they launched a series of crosses into The Hamlet penalty area, all of which were repelled by excellent defending.

However, with one minute of the six additional miunutes played, they finally found a way through. An excellent ball was chested down to the waiting McKenzie who had a clear shot from 12 yards. However, as everybody expected the ball to hi the net, he fired wide when it seemed easier to score.

Tonbridge could not fashion another opening as Dulwich held on to claim a hard fought three points.
