TRAVEL GUIDE | Altona 93 | Pre Season tour

TRAVEL GUIDE | Altona 93 | Pre Season tour

We have put together a short guide for supporters who are considering or already plan to travel to watch our men’s team play our friendship side, Altona 93 on the 12 July 2025.

This year marks the centenary of the first meeting between our two clubs during our Easter tour to Germany in 1925 and the pre-season fixture will see the fifth meeting of both teams.

Altona, an urban borough of Hamburg, is located a short distance to the west of the city centre and Southwest of the city's only airport7

Flying to Hamburg:

There are regular flights to Hamburg from all London airports, including Stansted and Gatwick. Flights are around one and a half hours, and the airport is just north of the city centre of Hamburg.

Travel into Hamburg from the airport is straightforward, using the suburban train (S-Bahn) or the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn (underground). The S-Bahn connects to the main train station Hamburg Hauptbahnhof (Hamburg Hbf) directly and the journey takes approximately 20 minutes.

The Airport station is located directly beneath the terminals, and you can either purchase a ticket from the ticket machines directly above the platform or via the hvv app which you are highly recommended to download!
Other flight options:

You could take this opportunity to visit other German cities, with an alternative airport option being nearby Bremen (an hour's travel to Hamburg Hbf from central Bremen) or fly to Berlin, which is approximately two hours by train to Hamburg from Berlin Hbf.
Train to Hamburg:

Taking the train from London provides an alternative to flying.  Whilst this is a significantly longer journey, around 8 to 9 hours direct, it does give you the opportunity to maybe break up the journey and to visit other towns or cities. You can travel from London to Hamburg on Eurostar, Deutsche Bahn, SNCF and SBB trains.
Accommodation:

There are plenty of accommodation options in Hamburg, with hotels to suit all budgets, local backpackers and Airbnb options.
There are plenty of recognisable chain hotels such as Holiday Inn, Premier Inn and Ibis, to name just a few.
Traveling Around Hamburg:

Getting around Hamburg is easy, with its extensive transport network, particularly on the S-Bahn and the U-Bahn; and the hvv app is an essential tool which not only allows you to purchase tickets but offers timetables, journey planners and more.

While you may wish to book accommodation close to Altona, the great transport links allow you the option of staying in other areas of the city.

Traveling to the Stadium:

The Adolf-Jäger-Kampfbahn (the home of Altona 93) is located only a short distance north from the centre of Altona. From Hamburg Hauptbanhof, you need to take the S-Bahn westbound to Hamburg-Altona and it should take about 10/15 minutes. From the station your best option is to either walk the 1.2 miles to the stadium or to get a local taxi.

Alternatively, the more popular route is to travel to Bahrenfeld S-Bahn station on the S1 train which is two more stops west after Altona.  It's a 10min walk to the ground from there.
