A neutral view from a groundhopper:
Although he has been to the Thurrock ground before, groundhopper Steve Jackson returned, to 'tidy up' his 'Isthmian ticks',after Romford moved there.
We caught Steve, from Staines, at the final whistle, to see what he made of the game, without 'blinkers' from either side, & to ask him a few questions about his hobby.
So how did you see the match:
"I thought Dulwich dominated the first half, it was a good penalty save from your keeper & a fluke equaliser for Romford. The second half was a another story, you looked a different side, not as fluent. They scored two good goals, & you didn't really trouble their keeper."
Groundhoppers have a bad reputation. How can you defend them?
"Well I'm just a weird person, possibly not the best to ask(he laughs!)
Basically we're just football enthusiasts, but show it in a different way to club fans. We enjoy travelling round the country, & often have other hobbies, which we like to combine. It's good to see different levels of skills at the various steps of the pyramid & see what goes on at different clubs. And we get a totally different perspective to the likes of you, as a neutral."
Have you ever supported an individual club?
"No, not really. Although I watched Crewe Alexandra for five or six years, as that is the town where I am from. I watched Watford home and away when I was at university, as they were the local team, but I then discovered non-league..."
So how many grounds have you been to?
" I'm not entirely sure, off the top of my head, seven hundred and eighty something..."
(Mishi then interjected that that proved he's not a proper groundhopper, as he's only on 608 grounds! Make your own mind up if Mishi is a hopper by looking at his grounds photo blog!)
What are some of the best grounds you've been to?
"Well most people tend to take 'best' as 'big' grounds,so off the top of my head, as I've not had time to think about it, I'd say somewhere like Arsenal's Emirates Stadium. It's a nice place to watch football from.
For atmosphere I'd have to say the Parc des Princes home of Paris Saint Germain. I went there a few seasons ago, the match was a really crap nil nil, but the atmosphere was end to end, with the home fans at both ends of the ground trying to out-sing each other."
Presumably you've been to Champion Hill?
"I didn't get to the old ground, but the new one I've visited three times. Once for The Hamlet, once for Fisher & another time for a London FA game. It's a good ground, a plus for a newer ground, as it pre-dates the crap identikit ones that get built everywhere nowadays, with their Atcost simple to assemble stands & blocks of terracing. Boring, boring, boring! And yours is also hemmed in, with many new ones being on the edge of towns, although I know that's different for London sides."
Finally, if you win the lottery tonight where are you packing your suitcase to take on the plane to your next game?
"I'd probably go to one of the big Buenos Aires or Rio derbies. I'd need to win the lottery to not just being able to afford it, but also for the private security to protect me from getting killed!"
And so concludes are interview. Many thanks to Steve for stopping to chat to us at Pitchero Hamlet!
