Late Equaliser Gives Hamlet A Draw
Minnie Cruttwell stunner secures draw in injury time against London Seaward.
On another warm evening in SE22, the Hamlet ended their home preseason schedule with a 3-3 draw against London Seaward in a game played at a quick pace and with good energy.
The home side came into the game having won for the first time in preseason on Sunday against Oxford United Women Devs, where Rebecca May had netted a brace. In the third minute she showed no let up in her goalscoring form as she was played through one-on-one with Emily Mackler, and duly dispatched a shot past her to give the Hamlet the lead. It could have been two soon after as a cross from Madi Parsonson almost beat Mackler for height, but she was able to retreat and push away from her goalline.
Despite being on top for the first ten minutes, the Hamlet found themselves having conceded an equaliser, when a ball dropped out of the evening sky for a Seaward attacker to volley inside Saskia Reeves-Priestley's near post to make it 1-1.
Parsonson then fizzed a freekick just over the bar as the hostesses looked to regain the lead. Sophie Manzi was withdrawn with barely 20 minutes on the clock, and it would be her replacement Ellie Millbourn who restored that lead, finishing a ball from the left side of the penalty area with power in the 27th minute.
At this point the Hamlet were forced into another change as Asia Harbour-Brown hobbled off to be replaced by Minnie Cruttwell. At this stage no one was aware of the impact that Cruttwell would have on the proceedings.
Just past the half-hour mark, Reeves-Priestley made a fantastic low save to keep out Katherine Long from distance, and just when it seemed that they would be ahead at the interval, the Hamlet were pegged back again. A ball down the right wing was crossed in exquisitely from the right-back, with Long producing a towering header in the area to equalise.
Into the second half and the home side began on the front foot, just as they had in the first, with the trialist midfielder sending in a cross from the right wing which agonisingly bounced wide of the far post. The game then slowed down following a spate of Hamlet substitutions, but despite this, Cruttwell was looking dangerous whenever she received the ball on the right wing, constantly trying to get past her marker and find teammates with crosses.
With the game about to tick into the final quarter, Seaward led for the first time. After having penalty claims for a handball waved away, from their first corner of the evening the ball was put back across the box for captain Kate Bradley to coolly steer past Reeves-Priestley.
Immediately Saskia Philp was inches away from drawing Dulwich level, seeing a chance trickle the wrong side of the far post, before the same player struck the post from close range, with Cruttwell teeing up Philp again seconds later to fire straight at Mackler.
Just when it seemed Seaward would earn the win, the home side had other ideas, as deep into stoppage time, Cruttwell received the ball almost on the right touchline deep in enemy territory, and from nowhere unleashed a fierce shot which nestled in the far top corner, sparking a big celebration from her teammates on and off the field. It was a fitting way to end the night's entertainment, and bring a curtain down on the home preseason fixtures. Before the competitive action starts, the Hamlet have one more friendly to come at Bromley this coming Sunday.
