Our star of last season makes his Peterborough debut
Erhun Oztumer appeared for the Peterborough United first team on Saturday, in their pre-season match at Barnet
Prior to the match there was an interview with him last week, on the 'Peterborough Telegraph' website:
Little man out to make a big impression at Posh
Recent Peterborough United recruit Erhun Oztumer believes an English obsession with size and power cost him an earlier opportunity in the Football League.
The pint-sized playmaker - he is just 5ft 4ins tall - moved to London Road from Ryman Premier League side Dulwich Hamlet last month.
The 23-year-old has been earning rave reviews for several seasons, but it’s Posh boss Darren Ferguson who has given Otzumer the chance to prove his worth at a higher level.
“No matter what happens I’ll always be grateful for getting this opportunity,” Oztumer said.
“Playing in the Football League has been a dream of mine for a long time and I’m thrilled to finally get the chance.
“I think it’s a bit of an obsession in England to put size and strength ahead of technique, but when I met Darren I knew within minutes that I would be signing for him.
“He had prepared charts showing exactly where he wanted the club to go and what he wanted from me.
“I was really impressed and I hope I can repay the faith he has shown in me.
“It was great to hear a manager be more interested in the positives I bring rather than the negatives.
“There are plenty of class players who are not very tall. Lionel Messi is hardly big is he? It’s an advantage for me to have a low centre of gravity so I can beat players more easily.
“I can play across the midfield, but the ‘number 10’ role really suits me. From there I should be able to score goals and create goals which is what I love to do.
“The other players have made me feel very welcome and I can’t wait to show what I can do.
“Training has been tougher than I’ve been used to. We’ve been doing two sessions a day for a start, but I’m sure I will soon be upto the fitness of the other players.
“If I play in the first match at Rochdale and I manage to score that would be incredible, but it’s all about winning promotion this season.
“The team came close last season so hopefully I can help them get up.”
Oztumer comes to Posh in prime form, albeit from matches played four levels below League One standard.
He scored 33 goals in 49 matches for Dulwich last season which included three hat-tricks. He was also credited with 18 assists.
That form earned him a trial at Premier League-bound Burnley and attracted the attention of other Football League clubs.
Luton were close to signing him before Ferguson stepped in.
"And he played a part in their friendly against Conference National outfit Barnet, at The Hive, on Saturday, and here's what the same website said about our former player:
"Posh laboured through the first-half despite the occasionally-impressive promptings of new man Erhun Oztumer, quite probably the smallest man ever to play for the club, and one who looks to have the speed, ability and size to beat defenders on either side and quite possibly by running through their legs.
One effortless run when he drifted past three defenders before clipping a shot just wide of an urpright was a first-half highlight. He’ll be seen to better effect when he plays behind Conor Washington and Assombalonga rather than Tyrone Barnett and Kyle Vassell."
